"Seven for a Secret"

The new CD by jazz guitar player Kostas Maginas, has the enigmatic title Seven for a Secret and was recorded in Áno Kato studios in Thessaloniki Greece.
The sound of the thirteen new pieces (eleven of them are composed by K.Maginas) is dominated by the use of guitars (electric, steel string, nylon string, and twelve string acoustics) as well as mandolin and Bulgarian tampura, combined with acoustic bass and a lot of percussion instruments.
The idea of the record is to explore the different colours you get by combining these instruments, a sound which is quite common in Celtic and Irish folk music but not so much in jazz.
There are other strong references too, elements of Greek traditional music, even Led Zeppelin, one of Kostas Maginas' favourite bands.
The result is a fresh musical offering which sometimes sounds like the traditional music of a country that has still to be discovered.
There are also some special guests in this record like the famous Bulgarian kaval player Theodossi Spassov who plays in "Seven leaves left" plus contributions from two singers. Andreas Karakotas is singing "Kaimos" an arrangement of a traditional tune from Macedonia and Maria Papanikolaou is singing "Mana louge me", a traditional tune from Crete.
The tune "For Arto" is dedicated to the great Armenian percussion player Arto Tuncboyaciyan and it is played on a Bulgarian tampura using one of his tunings.
